In 2018, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) issued an Enforcement Advisory cautioning against the use, sale, importation or marketing of low-cost, two-way VHF/UHF radios that do not comply with FCC rules. The advisory came in response to advocacy work conducted by the Land Mobile Communications Council (LMCC) and the Enterprise Wireless Alliance (EWA). While EWA is pleased that the FCC has issued the Advisory, the next step is enforcement of it. EWA seeks the support of licensed radio users and wireless sales and service providers to assist with the enforcement of violations of these FCC rules.

The Advisory notifies two-way radio users that:

  • The Enforcement Bureau has noticed the rise in sales of low-cost, two-way VHF/UHF radios that do not comply with FCC rules.
  • Some of the radios can be modified to operate on channels for which the user is not authorized and is not eligible.
  • Some radios are capable of prohibited wideband operations.
  • Anyone importing, advertising or selling noncompliant devices should stop.
  • Anyone owning such devices should not use them.
  • Violators may be subject to substantial monetary fines.
Complying with FCC rules is crucial to maintaining order and the efficient use of spectrum, specifically, protecting against interference from unauthorized radio use. The Advisory states that violators “may be subject to penalties authorized by the Communications Act, including, but not limited to, substantial monetary fines (up to $19,639 per day. . . and up to $147,290 for an ongoing violation).”

If you are aware of any individual or organization that is using illegal, non-compliant equipment or are aware of a company marketing such devices for sale, please contact EWA Communications Director Andrea Cumpston at 703-797-5111 or andrea.cumpston@enterprisewireless.org.

Don’t get left behind. Simplify your radio programming and stay up to date.

For organizations and agencies who rely on two-way radios for critical, real-time communications — such as first responders and utilities — performance cannot be compromised. The stakes are simply too high. It’s imperative to have the right resources and tools to address issues that could result in radio downtime or inefficiencies. Motorola Solutions digital radios are ultra-rugged and purpose-built to mission-critical specifications, but as with any modern communications device, they must be updated and maintained properly to function at optimal levels.

MANAGED SERVICES: ENSURE PEAK PERFORMANCE OF YOUR RADIOS
Strained budgets, limited technical resources and increasing programming and provisioning complexities have created a perfect storm among organizations trying to manage their radio fleets in-house — putting radio performance at risk. Whether it’s software and services to better help manage radios or complete outsourcing, leveraging managed services and expert support opens the door to opportunities for tremendous efficiency gains, cost savings and more effective use of personnel to focus on more critical matters.

TWO-WAY RADIO MANAGEMENT MADE SIMPLE
Managing a radio fleet is an important part of day-to-day operations, but it can also be expensive and time consuming. What if you could increase connectivity of your radios, while also reducing the complexity and risk? Motorola Solutions offers three service packages to help meet your APX radio management needs. Each package provides a higher level of maintenance to support your needs and reduce your risk.

Essential Services
Technical support when and where you need it, so you can maintain and restore your system.

Advanced Services
Rely on us to monitor and update your network, providing improved network response and continuity.

Premier Services
Transfer all or part of your system operations to our managed services team to maximize performance and reduce risk.

We will help you choose the right level of service to get the most out of your digital radios, so you can focus on the job at hand, not servicing your radios.
