Iowa Arthritis and Osteoporosis Center was venturing into private practice and knew their facility needed an update. After they completed a facility assessment they realized there were some gaps in their building’s security and monitoring. They wanted to create an environment where employees and patients felt comfortable and safe. In addition to taking on new liability, healthcare management companies in general have faced an increasing level of security issues and Iowa Arthritis wanted to provide an overall sense of safety in their environment.

As they increased and enhanced training, they took a few measures to augment the level of information their staff had access to and provided direct alerting system. In addition to installing cameras on each entrance, they put keypad locks on all doors and provided staff with personalized codes for entry.

Like smoke detectors, they wanted a way to alert the entire building of a threat. The facility spans some 20,000 square feet; they found key areas for installation of emergency buttons that directly triggered an overhead recorded audio alert to initiate evacuation processes. This ensured that every corner of the building could be alerted immediately should there be an issue.

Immediately, the staff felt more relaxed and secured in their environment. In addition to the security cover and peace of mind, Iowa Arthritis received a discount from one of their insurers because of these measures.

UNI Dance Marathon is a student run organization that raises money for the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital and the Children’s Miracle Network. Throughout a year, all money that is raised through UNI Dance Marathon is put toward supporting four areas at the hospital; research, education, equipment and enhancements.
